Abstract
Paul Evans amassed the papers in this collection while doing research on art potteries for magazine articles and for his book Art Pottery of the United States. The collection includes correspondence, photographs, newspaper and magazine articles, advertisements, trade catalogs, and other items.

Background note:
Paul Evans was born in 1937 in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to Mildred and Paul Alexander Evans. He attended Drew University, the University of Buffalo, holds a graduate degree in theology from the Episcopal seminary in New Haven, Connecticut, and a certificate from the University of Denver's Graduate School of Librarianship. He was ordained as a priest by the Episcopal Church.

He served as editor of Pacific Churchman, a publication of the Episcopal Diocese of California, editor of Western Collector, and western division editor of Spinning Wheel. The latter two publications were written for antique and collectibles dealers and collectors.

Evans is an honorary member of the American Ceramic Arts Society. He lectures, writes, and serves as a museum consultant. Since 1982, he has lived in Saratoga Springs, New York, where he is co-proprietor of the Anglican Bibliopole, an antiquarian bookshop specializing in books related to the Episcopal Church.

In 1974 Evans' book Art Pottery of the United States: An Encyclopedia of Producers and Their Marks was published. A second edition followed in 1987. He has contributed chapters and forewords to a number of other books about art pottery and potters, and written many articles on these subjects. In 1968, he was the guest speaker on a public television program about the Dedham Pottery.

Scope and content
Paul Evans amassed the papers in this collection while doing research on art potteries for magazine articles and for his book Art Pottery of the United States. The collection includes correspondence with dealers, collectors, museums, libraries, and government departments; photographs of pottery, marks, and people associated with art potteries; a videotape; postcards; newspaper and magazine articles, many of which are copies of articles that appeared at the time the pottery was being made; advertisements and trade catalogs; pamphlets; announcements of exhibits; and other materials relating to different art potteries and the people associated with them. Included with the correspondence are some letters with children of potters and copies of letters from the Charles F. Binns collection at Alfred University. Drafts of magazine articles and sections of his book are also found.

Organization
The papers are arranged primarily by the name of each pottery business, with a few files under the names of individuals or places. (Smaller potteries or those on which he did not have much material are grouped by letter; A, B, C, etc.) Box 18 contains some oversized materials about the Robertson family potteries. Boxes 26 and 27 contain some miscellaneous files and correspondence files filed by name of correspondent, not by name of pottery.
