These two volumes are sketchbooks done between 1841 and 1844 for a proposed publication, “Hudson River Rail Road Illustrated.” A list of 15 potential subscribers' names, including that of Washington Irving, is in the second volume. |
Vol. 1 is contained in a 15 × 17" folder with 3 ties; the covering pages are 9 × 13 1/2" and the inside pages are 8 3/16 ×

This volume is a sketchbook of several short trips taken by Whitefield through Illinois and up the Mississippi River. Many of the pages are filled with pencil drawings of towns through which he passed and short notations and observations. 7 9/16 × 9 1/16 inch pages have been folded and hand sewn. Photographs of this sketch book are found in Box 3. |

It includes floral prints; sketchbooks and diaries of several trips; watercolors of landscapes; lithographs, some mounted on wood, made for commercial uses and for published illustrations; pencil sketches, many of which are rough, of city scenes; pen and ink sketches; drawings of houses; photolithographs of places in New England (ca.1876); and notebooks and newspaper clippings.
