BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Admiral Sir Peter Warren was born in 1703, the youngest son of Catherine Aylmer Plunkett and Michael Warren of Warrenstown, County Meath, Ireland.  He rose through the naval ranks, and the highlights of his career were participating in the capture of the French fortress Louisbourg on Cape Breton in 1745 and the defeat of the French off Cape Ortegal in May 1747.  Warren died in 1752, in Dublin.  In 1731, he married Susannah DeLancey (1707-1771) of New York, the daughter of Stephen DeLancey.  (Her brother James served as chief justice and lieutenant governor of New York.)  Warren invested much of his wife’s dowry and his prize money in New England and New York property and other investments.

Sir Peter and Lady Susannah Warren’s daughter Susannah married Colonel William Skinner of New Jersey in 1767.  Skinner was the son of Elizabeth van Cortlandt and the Rev. William Skinner.  The younger Skinner was in the British army during the French and Indian War, and after that conflict was ended, he settled in England.  The colonel’s daughter Susanna Maria Skinner married Henry Gage in 1789.  Major-General Gage (1761-1808) inherited his uncle’s title and became the third Viscount Gage in 1791.  The Gages had investments in the United States, at least some (if not most) of which was inherited by Susanna Maria Skinner Gage from her grandfather Sir Peter Warren.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Accounts and letters, mostly pertaining to the administration of the American land holdings and other investments of Admiral Sir Peter Warren, and of those lands and investments as passed down through and added to by several generations of his heirs, particularly the Gage family.  Many of the papers were generated during the settling of Sir Peter’s and Lady Warren’s estates.   A number of the papers are to or from Lady Warren’s DeLancey relatives who were administering parts of the estates.  Other papers are to or from the Skinners and Gages, who married into the Warren family.  An introduction by Julian Gwyn, University of Ottawa, appears at the beginning of the first reel of film, together with a summary of the contents.

These papers are part of the American manuscripts in the Gage Papers held by the Sussex Archaeological Society (now called Sussex Past) in Lewes, England, and complement the much larger collection of Gage family papers in the William Clements Library, University of Michigan.

The papers are further described in A Guide to Manuscripts Relating to America in Great Britain and Ireland  (edited by B. R. Crick and Miriam Alman, Oxford University Press, 1961), p.433-434; and in A Guide to Manuscripts Relating to America in Great Britain and Ireland.  (Revised ed., John W. Raimo, ed. London: Meckler Books for the British Association for American Studies, 1979), pp. 222-223.
