BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

James Logan (1674-1751) was the progenitor of the Logan family of Philadelphia.  He was born in Ireland, to Quaker parents.  Logan became master of a school in Bristol, England, and there met William Penn, who asked him to be his secretary in Pennsylvania.  Logan served several positions in the colony, handled land transactions and revenue collecting, and negotiated with the Indians.  He gained wealth, partly through his own trading ventures, and social standing, both passed on to his descendents.  He married Sarah Read; they had four children.  He established the estate called Stenton, near Germantown, which is now opened to the public.

One of James’ sons was William Logan (1718-1776), who married Hannah Emlen.  William and Hannah had a son named George (1753-1821) who became a physician.  George practiced medicine briefly and then devoted himself to running Stenton as a model farm and serving in the state legislature and one term in the U.S. Senate.  George married Deborah Norris (1761-1839), who was from another noted Pennsylvania family.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

These papers include real estate records, maps, letters, accounts, inventories, wills, and poetry.  Most relate to the Logan family, but some do not.  The wills of William Logan (died 1776) and his wife Hannah are accompanied by financial accounts related to the settling of their estates.  Also found are account books and receipt books of the Logan family.  Several documents pertain to Stenton, the Logan estate near Germantown.  Deborah Norris Logan wrote several poems and a biographical sketch of Susannah Wright.

Among the items which do not pertain to the Logan family is the enlistment record of John Worsley in a Rhode Island military unit; letters of James and Mercy Warren to John Dickenson; land records involving Moses Cox; a manuscript written by Cotton Mather; and a document signed by James Monroe giving Lewis Cass and Duncan McArthur the authority to negotiate treaties with certain Indian tribes.

ORGANIZATION

The items are in no particular order.  Each item was assigned a number by the Colonial Dames, 68.2.1-47, and those numbers are used to describe the items below.  Most of the items are more than one page in length.  Between items 30 and 31 is found an unnumbered item, a bookplate of William Penn.
