BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

 

Samuel Rowland Fisher of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was the son of Joshua Fisher (1707-1783), in whose mercantile business he worked.  The Fishers were Quakers.  Samuel married Hannah Rodman.  He was a grandfather of Joseph Wharton.

 

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT

 

Notes and journals written during voyages to and from England and Ireland, May 1767 to October 1768 and August 1783 to September 1784; journal of a trip to Charleston, South Carolina, November 1772 to January 1773; journal of a trip to parts of Pennsylvania and Winchester, Virginia, with John Townsend, April 1787 to June 1787; journal of a trip to Newport, Rhode Island, by stage and boat to marry Hannah Rodman, May 1793 to June 1793. In most places he attended Friends meetings.  The records covering England includes notes on English manufacturers of textiles, glassware and ceramics, and Fisher's purchases from them.  The journals of Southern trips include comments about slavery.
