BIOGRAPHICAL
STATEMENT
As stated on the title page,
the partners in the company or store of Elnathan Eldredge & Co. of
Dartmouth, Massachusetts, were Elnathan Eldredge, Jethro Hathaway, Thomas Nye,
Jr., and Obed Nye. John Peckens was
their clerk. What was Dartmouth, Mass.,
in the 18th century has since split into the towns of Acushnet, New
Bedford, Westport, and Fairhaven. The
store seems to have been located at or near the whale oil tryworks on the
Acushnet River. Someone in the firm may
have been a Quaker.
Several men in Dartmouth were
named Elnathan Eldredge, and the one who was a partner was perhaps the one who
lived 1734-circa 1800/1804; he was the son of Elnathan Eldredge (1694-1746). Two wives were found for him: Anne Allen and
Sylvia Nye. The younger Elnathan is
listed as having a brother Salathiel (1732-?); a man of that name is mentioned
in the account book.
Jethro Hathaway (1720-1803)
was the son of Hephzibah Starbuck and Thomas Hathaway. He was married to Hannah West (1720-1782).
Thomas Nye, Jr., (born 1733)
and Obed Nye (1736-1815) are believed to be brothers, the sons of Deborah
Peckham and Thomas Nye, Sr. (1699-1743).
Genealogical web sites show that Obed Nye did have a brother named
Thomas, although most reports indicate that brother Thomas died young.
The firm’s clerk was John
Peckens, probably the man of that name who lived 1743-1825 and was married to Mary
Spooner in July 1769. In this volume,
the surname is spelled Peckens, but
all other records spell it Pickens. A genealogy web site records that John was
the son of Elizabeth Read and Andrew Pickens. John Pickens served in the Revolutionary War
and was later a cashier in the Bedford Bank.
(Papers of John Peckens’ sons Thaddeus and John, jr., Pickens are held
by the New Bedford Whaling Museum.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
Account book, or journal, of
a store in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts, covering 1768-January
1773. The accounts document the sale of
a wide range of goods, including food items, rum, knives and forks, indigo,
textile fabrics, thread and crewel yarns, buttons, crockery, shoes, lead, soap,
gunpowder and shot, nails, lcoks and other items of hardware, dyestuffs,
pewterware, pots and pans, naval stores, snuff, rope and line, a whale boat, etc. Trying (i.e. reducing whale blubber to whale
oil) is mentioned, and accounts are found for a cooper’s trade, a blacksmith’s
trade, and for Wharf & Co. Other
activities, such as schooling and making shoes and clothing, are also
mentioned. Ships are listed as customers
and also in customers’ accounts; accounts refer to whaling voyages and voyages
to Maryland and the West Indies. The
distribution of profits from ships’ voyages is documented. Several accounts document the building and
outfitting of a “new sloop.” Some house
building expenses are recorded as well.
(Elnathan Eldredge called it “Poiset House,” and perhaps meant a house
being built at Mattapoisett.) Occasionally, a customer’s town or occupation
is mentioned. References are made to
notes being given for payment. The
accounts switch back and forth between being in ledger format and being in
daybook format.
From 1814-1848, an unknown
person in Fairhaven, Mass., perhaps a Quaker, used the back of the volume as a
daybook. Much of the work recorded was
for use of oxen in plowing or hauling, or for agricultural products or other
labor. An unrelated name index, in a
separate pamphlet, was found laid into the volume. It may date to circa 1840-1850.
ORGANIZATION
The
accounts are in chronological order.
An
index to the Elnathan Eldredge & Co. accounts is available. The 19th century farm accounts are
not indexed.

RELATED MATERIALS
Ricketson, Daniel. The
History of New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts…. (New Bedford, the author, 1858).
Although this history sheds little light on the
principals in Elnathan Eldredge & Co., it includes a list of men who served
in the American army in the Revolution, and many of those names are found as
customers in this volume. It mentions
that many of the early settlers were Quakers.
Ricketson states “the sloops Nancy, Polly, Greyhound, and Hannah … were
employed in the whale-fishery.” (p. 58) The
Polly and Greyhound are mentioned
in this volume, as is the Betsey,
which is mentioned beginning on page 62..
Papers
of later generations of the Pickens and Nye families are held by the New
Bedford Whaling Museum.
