BIOGRAPHICAL
STATEMENT
George Ritter was a furniture maker and undertaker
in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a
member of the United Brethren (Moravian) Church. His wife was Ann Wilt, daughter of Abraham
Wilt. Children were Rebecca (who was
“afflicted”), Elizabeth, Rachel (who kept a shop in the 1840s), Mary Ann
(married to Robert Thomas of Germantown), Henrietta (wife of Wellington
McCletchy of Southwark), George W., and Catherine. In 1844, his business was located at 72
North Fourth Street, above Cherry. He
died August 21, 1849 at the age of 67.
His occupation at the time of his death was that of an undertaker.
His son George W. Ritter was also an undertaker, so
listed in the 1850 and 1880 censuses.
His wife was named Henrietta.
George W. Ritter died in 1897, and had been born around 1821. George W. Ritter was a member of the
Volunteer Firemen’s Association of Philadelphia. If the funeral plans on p. 231 of volume I
were for his funeral, he was also a member of the Grand Army of the
Republic.
SCOPE AND
CONTENT
Daybooks of George Ritter, covering May 26, 1818-Dec.
29, 1838. Ritter made and repaired
furniture, coffins, and other wood items, working chiefly in mahogany, but also
in walnut, pine, cherry, and poplar (spelled popalar). He made and repaired tables, chairs
(including dentist chairs, a drawing of one being found inside the back cover
of volume 2), stools, bureaus, desks and secretaries, bookcases, and other
furniture pieces. When he made a new
piece, he often wrote a description of the piece, such as size, number of
drawers, and decoration (examples: pine table with 2 drawers, top 5 feet in
diameter, covered with green baize; or bookcase with Gothick sash doors and
bronzed cupid on the head of case). He
took down and put up bedsteads and supervised the moving of furniture. He
supplied customers with planks and boards.
One of his customers was the artist Thomas Birch, for whom he supplied
boards and picture frames. Another
customer was the school mistress Mrs. Campbell, for whom he supplied tambour
frames, doubtless for her pupils’ needlework pictures. Ritter more often repaired furniture than
made new pieces; he described the repairs, such as “planning & scraping
tops of two mahy [mahogany] card tables, mending, varnishing frames &
polishing the same.” He added locks to
some furniture and replaced old brass handles with new glass knobs. Among the more unusual pieces he made were a
boot and a book for shop signs, biers for churches, a counter (probably for a
store), poultry racks, a bottle drainer, a tray to be used for the love feasts
at the United Brethren Church, and several dentist chairs. He made toy beds and hobby horses as well. When Lafayette visited Philadelphia in 1824,
Ritter supplied field bedsteads for members of his party who stayed at the
arsenal near Frankford.
Making coffins was a large part of Ritter’s business,
and by 1830, this was the bulk of his business, although he continued to repair
and make some furniture. Records of
making a coffin or receiving payment for a coffin appear on almost every page
of his day books. Ritter also provided
services for funerals, such as hearse and carriage hire, transporting bodies,
or an ice box. He provided breast plates
(usually decorated with angels and flower pots) for coffins, and fabrics for
coffin linings and shrouds. Some entries
contain charges for digging graves, and Ritter hired men to watch the grave of
William H. Jordan for three nights after his burial. Ritter buried some people in plots which he
owned in cemeteries. More often were mentioned internments in various
church cemeteries, especially the United Brethren Church, since he was a member
of that congregation. Ritter supplied
the coroner with coffins and sometimes buried deceased patients of the
Pennsylvania Hospital (for which he also made and repaired furniture, especially
bedsteads).
Ritter recorded payments made to workmen, including
carvers and a turner. A couple of these workers
were identified as journeymen, but most of the time, one can only infer that a
man was working for Ritter (or perhaps Ritter was working for other
cabinetmakers). Perhaps because these
were his day books, not the main ledgers, the customers’ first names are not
always recorded, making the exact identification of customers problematic in
some cases. Sometimes some identifying information was
included, such as an address or an occupation.
African Americans were identified as colored men or women.
The first volume was not completely filled by George
Ritter, and his son George W. Ritter used part of this volume to record his undertaking
business dealings from Sept. 10, 1878-March 28, 1883. He furnished coffins and shrouds, arranged
for hearse and carriage hire, provided ice boxes, and arranged for digging of
graves. Although his father had often
provided mahogany coffins, George W. usually provided walnut ones. Glued inside the front cover of the first
volume is a list of death dates for members of the family of Jacob Ritter, Jr.,
and his wife Susan. Laid into this
volume is a receipt for dues paid to the Volunteer Firemen’s Association of
Philadelphia by George W. Ritter in 1882.
On page 231 of this volume are funeral plans for an unknown man, but
most probably for George W. Ritter, as he wanted representatives of the
Volunteer Fireman’s Association there, as well as members of GAR post 94. He was to be buried in the Monument Cemetery
in Philadelphia.
ORGANIZATION
Volume I: Day book, May 25, 1818-Dec. 4, 1828 (p.
1-137). Then, after several blank pages,
the volume contains ledger book entries, 1817-1828. Some other financial notes are found on p.
170. On pages 176-186, one finds
financial records of undertaker George W. Ritter, from 1878-1883. On page 231 is an undated and unsigned note
headed “Arangements [sic] for my funeral,” probably for George W. Ritter’s
funeral. Inside the back cover is a note
about grape harvests in the 1820s, and a list of people to whom grapes were
sent in 1828. Inside the front cover is
found a receipt for dues paid to the Volunteer Firemen’s Association of
Philadelphia by George W. Ritter in 1882, and a list of death dates for members
of the family of Jacob Ritter, Jr., and his wife Susan. Volume includes blank pages.
The earliest pages of volume I are detached from the
main volume and are slightly out of order.
See note at beginning of name index to this volume for more about this.
Volume II: Day book of George Ritter, Jan. 1,
1829-Dec. 29, 1838. Inside the back
cover is a drawing for a chair for Dr. Roper.
Volume includes blank pages.

NAME INDEX TO
VOLUME 1 (acc. 15x1.1)
Somehow, the first pages have gotten loose from the
volume and also out of date sequence. The
pages in the volume are numbered, but for these first, loose pages, most of the
numbers are worn away, so they have been assigned the page numbers 1a-21b,
ignoring any legible page numbers which may appear. Ritter’s proper numbering sequence begins
with page 32, but there is no time gap between page 21b and page 32. Page 1a-b has dates March 26-June 29,
1818. Page 2a-b has dates Oct. 27,
1821-Dec. 15, 1821. Pages 3-16 then
resume with the rest of June 29, 1818-Oct. 25, 1821. The correct sequence begins with Dec. 21,
1821 (page 17). Entries for Oct. 8,
1819-March 31, 1820, and for Oct. 26, 1821-Dec. 20, 1821, and for June 12-July
4, 1822, are missing. A few blank pages
are found in the volume.
Records of undertaker George W. Ritter are on p.
176-186. The names on those pages are
included in the name index, but the items and services mentioned are not indexed,
as these are all general undertaker records (coffins, carriages, coffin plates,
hearses, etc.)
Index to furniture forms and other items mentioned
in this volume follows the name index.
