BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT
John
Wakefield Francis was a physician who co-founded the New York Academy of
Medicine. He served as the second
president of the Academy, taught at Bellevue Hospital, wrote medical texts, and
edited professional journals. He was
also engaged in a number of civic activities.
He married Maria Eliza Cutler (1794-1868), and they had a son Samuel
Ward Francis (1835-1886).
SCOPE AND CONTENT
This
is an extra-illustrated version Francis' work, extended to six volumes with the
addition of letters and engravings.
Letters were to and from Francis and primarily social in nature,
although some mention medical matters.
There is also a letter from Henry T. Tuckerman about the publication of
the volume. Engravings depict people
(physicians, ministers, actors and actresses, historical figures, writers, and
a few artists), New York buildings and scenes, and historic American
scenes. Often, illustrations were
selected to accompany the text.
In
volume 2 is found a ticket to the Canal Celebration Ball. This was held in 1825 to celebrate the
opening of the Erie Canal.

The
volumes were never bound. They are in
