BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT
Josiah White was a carpenter, working mostly in Ashburnham, Massachusetts. Early in his career, he was a partner in the firm Scolley & White. The company performed carpentry and cabinet-work in Newton and later, Ashburnham, Massachusetts. Josiah White was born in Vermont in 1782, the son of Elisha and Deborah Hunt White. Josiah married twice and died in Ashburnham in 1871. In the 1860 census, he was listed as a carpenter, with son Charles who was a chair maker and daughter Susan who was a chair seater. He also had older sons named Ivers, Joseph, and Josiah E., and these are presumably the men of those names who assisted in his work. Scolley has not been identified, although he was possibly the Captain John Scolley mentioned in the account book.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
Records debits and credits accrued by Scolley & White and Josiah White for a variety of wood working activities from 1808 to 1845. Such things as setting posts in yards, shingling barns, mending roofs, fixing furniture (bedsteads, desk, tea table, etc.), repairing doors, framing and lathing houses and stores, "making trap doors in the mill house," building closets, making and putting up sinks (spelled cinque), and constructing a loom. Mention is also made of work on sleds and wagons, window sashes, and coffins. In addition to making coffins, there are charges for linings, robes, trim, and the use of a horse and wagon - a hearse is mentioned in one account – indicating that White was also offering those services for funerals. Boards, nails, filing saws, putty, and other supplies were purchased or exchanged. The volume also features records of employees, when they worked, and how much they were paid. On the work charts, Sundays were marked, as was Thanksgiving, but not Christmas.
A list of kitchen utensils and pots and pans is found on page 393. A child, perhaps Flossie Deen, later wrote some names and words in the volume.
