BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

John Read was a lawyer, financier, and philanthropist in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Born in 1769, he was the son of George Read (1733-1798) and Gertrude Ross.  He graduated from the College of New Jersey (Princeton) in 1787 and then studied law in his father's office in New Castle, Delaware.  Read was admitted to the bar in 1791.  In 1789, he moved to Philadelphia and married Martha Meredith.  Read was appointed Agent General of the United States under the Jay Treaty in 1794.  He served in that capacity until 1809.  Read was active in Pennsylvania politics, a leader of the Federal Party, and held several elected offices.  From 1819 to 1841, he was President of the Philadelphia Bank as well as head of other corporations.  He was active in the Episcopal Church.  Read and his family resided in a mansion on the south side of Chestnut St. between 7th and 8th Streets.

Martha Meredith  (1773-1817) was the daughter of General Samuel Meredith, the first treasurer of the United States and a successful business man in Philadelphia.  The Reads’ children were John Meredith (1797-1874), Edward (died young), Henry Meredith (1802-1829), and Margaret Meredith (1806-1854).  Various members of the Meredith and Read families are mentioned in the account book.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Volume consists of two sections.  The first, kept from 1799 to 1801, was used to record the official accounts of Read as agent general.  Entries list amounts paid to special agents in counties throughout the United States.  No details are provided.  The second part, used from 1805 to 1811, contains some of Read's business accounts and a very few household expenses.   These accounts focus on financial transactions, such as payments of ground rent, interest, bills of exchange, dividends, bank shares, real estate purchases, the cost for surveying lots, and settlements of decedents’ estates.  Read also participated in some international trading, mentioning dealings with two Canton merchants and importing china and other items from China.

Scattered throughout these business records are mentions of such things as support for his church, purchases of shoes and other items of clothing, some grocery items (sugar, tea, coffee, etc.), “railings for my front door step,” a tombstone, and buying the time of an African American boy named Joshua Parnall.  (This boy had been purchased by his own father, and may have been hired as an indentured servant.)  There are also entries for house and stable repairs and painting, as well as purchases of home furnishings, including a washing machine, an 8-day clock, a bedstead, a leaf for a table, gilt chairs, a patent stove, carpeting, dimity, and fringe.  An unusual purchase was that of a “thunder conductor,” presumably meaning a lightning rod.  Read paid people to hang wallpaper in various rooms, including his tea room.  Mrs. Jones made curtains for the house.  William Woollett was paid for copying a portrait of Read’s father.

The volume opens with a comment on an essay published by Read at age 22, and how he now realizes how superficial his understanding was at that age.
