BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

George Dummer, Jr. was a glass manufacturer in Jersey City, New Jersey.  His father, George Dummer, started a glass works in Jersey City around 1826 after establishing a glass retailing shop in Manhattan.  During its nearly forty years of operation, the glass works underwent numerous name changes (in the 1840s-1860s, it was P.C. Dummer & Co.)  but a Dummer family member was involved in the business until 1862.  Dummer produced blown glass, pressed glass, and cut glass.  The Dummer Glass Company was a pioneer in obtaining patents for pressed ware.

George Dummer (1782-1853) and his brother Phineas Cook Dummer (1797-1875) were born in New Haven, Connecticut.  They were two of the sons of Stephen Dummer (1755-1835) and his wife Eunice Cook (1758-1816).  Phineas served as mayor, fire chief, and collector of taxes for Jersey City.
