BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

George Morrison Coates was a Quaker merchant in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Born into a mercantile family, the son of Josiah Coates, he attended Friends Grammar School in Philadelphia and then learned the hardware business in a store owned by Benjamin Horner.  He married Horner's daughter and later joined his brother-in-law, Joseph P. Horner, selling hardware.  By 1824, he was working as a jobber in the pottery business.  His daughters Beulah and Mary were active in women’s charitable organizations in the mid-nineteenth century.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Volume records ceramics and glassware purchased and sold by George Coates from 1824 to 1835.  As a jobber he bought most of his wares at auctions in Philadelphia, Pa. and New York, N.Y.  A few glass works and potteries are also mentioned as suppliers.  Although 131 customers are noted in the volume, the bulk of Coates' sales were to country merchants.  Among the objects mentioned are cups and saucers in sets, muffin plates, glass lamps, edged flatware, painted teaware, colored and painted bowls, mugs, pitchers, dishes, creamware, blue printed pieces, decanters, and tumblers.  Most of the items were sold at modest to cheap prices.  After mid-1831, the entries relate to seeds or payment of past accounts.
