BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Jonathan Holmes was a merchant in New York, N.Y.  He may have been the son of Jonathan Holmes (1697-1768) and Teuntje Hendrickson (1699-1768) of Middletown, Monmouth County, New Jersey.   From an ad in a New York newspaper of 1752, it is known that he was in partnership with his brother John.   He also had brothers named Daniel and William.  Because the Holmes family was large, and many names were re-used for fathers, sons, uncles, and cousins, it is difficult to determine just which Jonathan and John Holmes used this volume.

Joseph S. Holmes, born Oct. 3, 1807, in Middletown, Monmouth County, New Jersey, was the son of Jonathan (circa 1760-1824) and Grace Jarves Holmes.  His grandfather Holmes was a merchant in New York City, and his father a merchant in New Jersey.  For a time, Joseph Holmes was a harness and trunk maker, but turned to farming.  He moved his family to Farmington, Michigan, where his first wife died.  He later remarried and died in Grand Ledge, Michigan, on June 30, 1886.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Records debits and credits accrued by Holmes in his mercantile activities from 1749 to 1754.  The variety and quantity of Holmes' stock appears to have been large.  Such items as ponlipoon snuff boxes, brass japanned inkpots, black walnut chests of drawers with crow feet from Rhode Island, looking glasses, hardware of both brass and iron for furniture and doors, candlesticks, woodworking tools, London Crown glass, tea pots with high sides, and many textiles, including black flowered worsted damask and pencil calicoes are featured.  Holmes also sold prints of English country houses, views of London, maps of the world, and books on many subjects.  Holmes conducted a considerable amount of business in Newport and Providence, Rhode Island, as well as taking shares in venture cargo to Virginia and the West Indies.  Holmes sold his wares to many local customers in New York and New Jersey, particularly Monmouth County as well as other merchants.  He often identified the occupation or hometown of buyers.
