BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT
Joseph Brandon and Benjamin Dolbeare were merchants in Boston, Massachusetts. Benjamin Dolbeare (1711-1787) was the son of John (a pewterer and ironmonger) and Sarah Dolbeare. Benjamin served in several town offices, most notably that of Overseer of the Poor. Nothing else is known about Joseph Brandon.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
Lists transactions for the business of Brandon & Dolbeare from 1739 to 1748. The firm bought and sold such items as looking glasses, sconce glasses, lace, ribbon, textiles fabrics, girdles, taffeta, velvet masks, gloves, tailors' shears, wax, necklaces, buttons, snuff boxes, Jew's harps, etc. They acted as middlemen between firms and between businesses and individuals. For example, John Stallwood, a London cabinetmaker, exported cases of looking glasses to Brandon & Dolbeare, who in turn retailed the glasses to numerous individuals in the Boston area. The firm also exported whale oil to England. One entry details clothing acquired for an unnamed slave girl.
Often, the account includes not only the name of the customer, but also that person's town of residence and occupation. A number of women are listed as shopkeepers. Tailor, gunsmith, saddler, gilder, trader, and peddler are some of the other occupations mentioned. On page 19 is found a list of items purchased by Benjamin Dolbeare for mourning his father’s death. The accounts also mention when customers have died, declared bankruptcy, or dissolved partnerships.
