BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT
William Camp Gildersleeve resided in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He was a merchant and operated a general store. He was an elder and active in the financial affairs of the local Presbyterian church (now First Presbyterian Church). He was born in Georgia in 1795, the son of the Rev. Cyrus and Amerinthia Norman Gildersleeve. He died in October 1871. The record in the burial registry noted that he was "a most goodly man, the friend of the poor & oppressed." He was noted for his abolitionist work, a fact reflected in his account book.
Gildersleeve was in partnership with Henry C. Anhaeuser as Anhaeuser and Gildersleeve, but whether this was the store or another business is not known.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
Records debits and credits accrued by Gildersleeve from 1826 to 1842. Although many entries note the sale of sundries, a wide range of products are mentioned, including foodstuffs, wood, coffee, textiles, wagon boxes, dictionaries and other books, ink and quills, oil, brushes, nails, tacks, coal, iron, steel, and other household items. Credits were given for such items as a hammer for W.C., files, flax seed, spices, sugar, salts, and produce, as well as such activities as making a clothing, sewing, blacksmithing, carting, and hauling. Gildersleeve identified who in the family items were for. Relationships, such as son of, or place of residence were sometimes noted with the names of account holders. A few account holders were noted as being African Americans. Rents paid by people living with Gildersleeve's family are documented in the volume. Also of interest is a list of "articles belonging to Bartholomew's coal cooking stove," including drip pans, bake irons, a copper bottom tea kettle, etc.
Also included are sections entitled "Received at monthly concert" and "Weekly contributions," both these in support of church activities. Donations included candles, wine, bread, coal, and other items needed by the church. The expenses of the building committee of the new Presbyterian church (First Presbyterian Church of Wilkes-Barre) are recorded in this manuscript.
The list of donations found on p. 228 and 269 is interesting. Not only did Gildersleeve support his church and Sunday school, but he also gave to other churches, missionary work, antislavery societies (including a Wilberforce colony in Canada), a temperance organization, and the Board of Education. He gave coal, cash, and textiles to the needy; a pair of spectacles to a poor woman; money to build a school for African-American children; and gave $4 to help support the Africans from the ship Amistad (which he spelled Armsitad).
In the index section of the volume is found a list of apple trees and where they were planted. Varieties included Newtown pippin, Spitzenberger, greening, and a swan apple from Germany. Laid into the front of the volume is a printed list of Garden Seeds raised in Cambridge, Washington County, New York, and at the Horticultural Garden in Lyons, Wayne County, N.Y., and put up by Crosby & Peck.

INDEXES
The
volume contains a name index in front.
This has not been transcribed; rather, the names were taken directly
from the pages of the volume.
There are two created indexes to the volume, one to names and the other to occupations mentioned in the account book. The occupation index is not complete, but gives an idea of the sorts of work recorded.
Many
names occur within accounts; an attempt was made to capture all names, but the
attempt was abandoned after page 59 because of the time consumed by the work. Because the handwriting in the volume is
small and the indexer’s eyes are old, some of the names on p. 1-59 have
undoubtedly been overlooked or misread. Names
in square brackets are supplied and may not be correct.
