BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT
Samuel Phillips Savage was a merchant in Boston, Massachusetts; he later moved to Weston, Mass. The son of Arthur Savage and Faith Phillips, he married Sarah Tyler. He was moderator of the meeting at Old South Church on Dec. 14, 1773, where it was decided that tea should not be landed in Boston's harbor, a decision which led to the Boston Tea Party. He had a brother named Arthur.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The volume opens with four pages of transactions made for the estate of Arthur Savage. The remainder of the entries record transactions made by Samuel Phillips Savage with craftsmen, store keepers, other merchants, and Arthur Savage's estate. Very few of the entries refer to specific products, instead mentioning merchandise and sundry accounts. A few note the buying and selling of apparel. Savage conducted business in and around Boston as well as with merchants in Newport, Providence, London, and other cities. A number of his transactions were with women; some were noted as being widows, but others were shopkeepers.

Samuel
P. Savage had a brother named Arthur, and it is not always possible to tell
definitely whether the accounts refer to father or brother. Also, there was possibly a third Arthur
Savage (“comm. of an eastern fort”).
