SCOPE AND CONTENT

 

Contains scores of Christmas and New Year's greeting cards, a few Valentines, and many carefully trimmed illustrations.  From at least 8 publishers who were active in London, England, during the 1870s, the cards show an almost uniformly secular view of Christmas while at the same time not once depicting the Santa Claus or Father Christmas character.  The trimmed illustrations come from newspapers, magazines, and catalogs.  Most show well-dressed women, or brightly-colored flowers, though there are also a good number of children, animals, and vegetables, as well as two pages of ships.
