BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

John Woody Papworth (1820-1870) was a British architect and antiquary best known for his heraldic reference book "Ordinary of British Armorials."  He was the first son of John Buonarotti Papworth (1775-1847), a prolific British architect much employed in the alteration and decoration of country homes, who published drawings and essays.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Consists of an album of original drawings and tracings of architectural designs and furniture styles of the early Victorian period, compiled in scrapbook form.  Though the drawings were executed by several different people, the majority of the signed drawings are by John Woody Papworth.  Some are signed by his more renowned father, the English architect and designer John Buonarotti Papworth.

The many architectural drawings record ornament and detail in a large number of churches and other public buildings, both English and Italian.  In addition, there are 138 drawings for chairs (especially chair backs), 55 designs for tables, 28 dressing tables, 20 hat or clothes racks, 50 designs for draperies (including cornices and valances of remarkable beauty), 3 game tables, 20 music stools, 3 fire screens, 2 candelabra and 1 chandelier, bed steps and beds, sewing stands, desks, settees, 22 sideboards, 1 piano, mouldings in great variety, 1 girandole, and approximately 50 mirrors, baby carriages, invalid carriages and lawn chairs, and innumerable couches and sofas.
