BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Thomas Shields is in List of Philadelphia Silversmiths and Allied Artificers, by Maurice Brix, as a goldsmith who advertised in newspapers from 1769 to 1776, and appeared in city directories 1785-1794.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Contains daily entries of credits and debits for making and repairing a wide variety of silver and goldwork items. A majority of entries are for work done on buckles, scabbards, knives ("cuttoes") and buttons, though entries such as "To 1 Quart Silver Tankard," "To Mounting Miniture Picture in Gold," and "To 6 Silver table Spoons with Shoulders on the Handles" also appear. One steady customer was Dr. Benjamin Rush. The first page and a half of accounts are repeated (by mistake?) at the back of the volume.

Two letters (dated 1781 and 1845; and both addressed to "Mr. Thomas Shields" in Philadelphia, Penn.) are laid in at front. The former is a religious exhortation against universalism from four absent members of his church. The latter (from his nephew in Louisville, Ky.) refers to the graduation exercises at Georgetown College and describes the efforts of one graduate, Mr. Clarke King, to answer the call into the ministry.
