BIOGRAPHICAL
STATEMENT
John Patterson was a fancy
chair maker and then a paperhanger in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His name has been reported to be John Watham
Patterson, although this daybook gives no evidence of a middle name or initial. He reportedly apprenticed with Windsor chair
maker Robert Fisher of Baltimore from around 1810-1816, but Patterson first
appears in Philadelphia city directories in 1813. It is difficult to trace John Patterson in
records because there were several men with that name in Philadelphia. He was listed as a fancy chair maker in most
of the city directories from 1813-1833, working at various addresses. In 1813
and 1814, a J. Patterson was listed in partnership with G. Gerro at 79 Browne
St.; Gerro has not been further identified.
The 1814 directory also had a separate listing for John Patterson at 81
Browne. There was no directory in 1834,
so what Patterson was doing then is unknown.
In the 1835/36 directory, he was listed as working in a dry goods store
at 353 North Second Street. He then
became a paperhanger. From 1837-1842, he
was on North Second or North Third Street.
In the 1844 and 1845 directories, there were two paperhangers named John
Patterson, and it is not known which is the keeper of this account book. In 1850, John C. Patterson, Jr. was listed as
a paperhanger. No John Patterson was
listed as a paperhanger from 1851-1855, and no directories were checked after
that year. (For the years 1843 and
1846-1849, there were either no directories or no John Patterson, paperhanger,
was listed.)
The names of Geo. W.
Patterson and [Al?]fred Hamilton Patterson are written on the front fly-leaf of
the daybook. In the 1841 Philadelphia
directory, George W. Patterson, M.D., was listed at the same address as John
Patterson, paperhanger. Dr. Patterson
was born around 1819; his parents were John and Mary Patterson. He attended the University of Pennsylvania in
the years 1837 and 1839, and he receiving his medical degree from there. He was baptized a member of the Second
Baptist Church in 1840. He died in 1852
from consumption and was buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery. In the 1850 census, Hamilton Patterson was
living at the same address as George Patterson.
John C. Patterson (whose name does not appear in the daybook, but who
was listed as a paperhanger in the 1850 city directory), age 32, also died from
consumption in May 1852 and was also buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery. In the 1850 census, John C. Patterson was
listed as a laborer, living with his wife Sarah, and their two daughters. The name Woodward Vincent Patterson is found
on a sheet of paper laid into the daybook, but nothing has been found about
this person.
SCOPE AND
CONTENT
Daybook of chair maker and
paperhanger John Patterson of Philadelphia, 1816-1845. The chair accounts cover November 1816-May
1831, while the paperhanging accounts cover October 1835-May 1845. Some papers dated in the 1850s are laid in
the back of the volume. Patterson made
and mended chairs and stools, and he made chairs for other establishments
(Delavau & Stewart, Delavau & Jones, for example). Among the styles mentioned are slat back,
Windsor, Windsor bent back, ball back, rocking, square back, “new pattern,”
sewing, Grecian, fancy, turned tops, round post, and others. He mentioned swan, honeysuckle (spelled hunisuckel), and griffin frets. The chairs are sometimes well described; for
example, an entry on May 4, 1825, reads “sold to go to Lancaster 2 chairs round
posts square tops Box fret in the back plain bands on top Bow and with Rockers
at 2.75” plus 12.5 cents for packing.
However, many of the entries are much less descriptive: 12 swan fret
chairs, 12 fancy chairs, 1 slat back sewing chair. On July 28, 1825, George Springer supplied Patterson
with large quantities of back and front feet, front rails, back lists, and
moulding, evidentially materials to make chairs.
Patterson varnished, painted
(blue, rose, cream, sage and umber are among the colors mentioned), mended,
matted, ornamented, and gilded the chairs he made. Among the woods mentioned were poplar planks,
curled maple (sometimes chairs were painted to imitate this), rosewood (perhaps
also achieved by graining?), and bird’s eye maple. Patterson’s accounts reflect his interactions
not just with customers but also with others in the Philadelphia craft
community, those who supplied wood and varnish, for example. There are some date gaps in his records,
which correspond with economic downturns.
It has been suggested that during these gaps, Patterson was working in
someone else’s shop, not on his own.
The last chair reference is found on page 164 of the daybook.
On page 165 are found some
references to rent and furniture, accounts dated 1832, and the first account
pertaining to paperhanging, dated October 16, 1835. After page 165, Patterson started with a new
page 1. The paperhanging accounts end on
July 29, 1842, except for three entries dated 1845. He hung borders, ceiling, side, and pieces of
paper. He also sized and scraped walls
in preparation of hanging the paper.
Other than entryways, vestibules, stairways, and parlors, Patterson did
not mention specific rooms. He sometimes
listed a customer’s address; he did multiple houses for some people,
evidentially builders or landlords.
Some papers are described as being glazed or French; also mentioned are
chintz pattern, China pattern, “welvit” (i.e. velvet) border, marbled, and
fireboard print, but in general, there is no description of the wallpapers
used. While Patterson was mostly working
as a paperhanger, there are also a few references to selling crockery,
tumblers, tea sets, and such, perhaps stock left over from his dry goods store.
A loose sheet laid into the
volume has entries dated 1852. Pew rent,
dues for the Montgomery Lodge and Hebron Camp, tax payments, flour and
cornmeal, are mentioned. The name Woodward
Vincent Patterson is written four times on one side. Another loose sheet lists books which were
checked out and returned to James W. Rusling, librarian, September 1840. Glued inside the back cover are calendars for
1837 and 1838; the 1837 calendar was supplied by W. Marks, [torn] and
ornamental printer.

DETAILED
DESCRIPTION OF THE COLLECTION
Location:
range 31
The volume has three number schemes, pages 1-[6],
pages 1-165, and pages 1-250 [no entries after p. 221]. The first two schemes (1-[6] and 1-165)
record accounts of chair-making; on page 165 are found a few other
miscellaneous transactions and the first account of paperhanging. The
third number scheme (1-250) is used for accounts of paperhanging. Because of this, the index is in two parts:
one for chair-making and the other for paperhanging. The first number scheme is recorded as pages
1a-6a in this index.
Some names are found within accounts, not standing
on their own; an attempt was made to index these names as well, but some have
probably been missed.
Two loose pages laid into back of volume were not
indexed.

NAME INDEX TO
PAPERHANGING ACCOUNTS (third set of numbered pages)
Note: the
first paperhanging account occurs on page 165 of the second set of numbered
pages.
The numbering
scheme of this section is complicated.
It starts with page 1, but then page 7 is also numbered page 1. Pages through 7-52/58 have two numbers, but
then the scheme continues with page 53.
So, to facilitate indexing, the first set of pages 1-6 are numbered
1a-6a, and then pages 1/7-52/58 have two page numbers; the lower number (found
in a corner of the page, not the middle) is the one used for indexing purposes.
A few names
found inside accounts, not at head, have also been indexed.
