BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Abraham Hoover was a cabinetmaker in Lampeter township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Included with the account book are some receipts and drawings of pieces of furniture, including a dresser for displaying and storing china, chests of drawers of various sizes (including tall chests), and a desk.  A barn or shed is also depicted.  Intermixed with the cabinetmaking accounts are accounts from the 1830s which record agricultural output.  Also mixed in with Hoover’s accounts are writing exercises; receipts of wages paid by John Miller to Abraham Mylin; copies of passes for Abraham Mylin, a freeman, signed by Michael Hubley; and various receipts and notes about payments.  In his accounts, Hoover records making chests, cradles, dough troughs, book cases, tables, clock cases, window shutters, bedsteads, and other items.  He also kept records of the amount of work done by his journeymen, listing them by name (unfortunately, the surnames are difficult to read).  Some of the accounts are in German.  On page 139 are recipes for blue dye.

ORGANIZATION

Most of the pages in the original volume were not numbered, but some pages were numbered 1-26 and these were a two page spread.  When the volume was copied, the pages were given new numbers, and the original pages 1-26 are now pages 29-81.  The index in the volume (on new pages 22-28) refers to the original page numbers, but the numbers in the index below refer to the new page numbers.

LANGUAGE OF MATERIALS

The materials are in English and German.

INDEX TO THE VOLUME:

Most of the pages in the original volume were not numbered, but some pages were numbered 1-26 and these were a two page spread.  When the volume was copied, the pages were given new numbers, and the original pages 1-26 are now pages 29-81.  The index in the volume (on new pages 22-28) refers to the original page numbers, but the numbers below refer to the new page numbers.  The agricultural accounts from the 1830s are mixed in with the earlier accounts.  Some names appear only in the index because the appropriate account book pages went missing before it was copied.   Passages in German were not indexed.
