BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Jacob Tomlinson was a sawyer from Howard Grove, in Maiden Creek township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, during the first quarter of the 18th century. He was probably a Quaker. He possibly partnered with James Dickinson, whose name also appears on the covers of the account book.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

This unusual daybook records the daily amounts of lumber sold in board feet by sawyer Jacob Tomlinson between 1808-1818. Each page is laid out in grid fashion with the headings of "posts, scantling, plank, board, and lath." The same customer names appear throughout the document. Some notations in German appear on a page without entries, and poetry written by a critically ill (possibly dying) man is also included. The item bears at least two, possibly three or more hands.
