BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

The account book was kept by an unknown cabinetmaker, but possibly Peter Smith, in Strasburg, Virginia.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

This manuscript account book documents the business transactions of a cabinetmaker from Strasburg, Virginia, from 1820-1828. Provenance suggests that the document may have been compiled by Peter Smith, although census records bearing his name date some forty years earlier. Entries indicate that the cabinetmaker built numerous dining tables, coffins, and cradles, as well as pine chests, button boxes, French post beds, brick molds, commodes, candle stands, and bureaus. Many items were made from walnut which he purchased in large quantities.
