Account book was kept by an unknown person.

 

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT

 

 This unidentified manuscript records sales of a general store in the Portsmouth, New Hampshire, area from 1752-1755.  A variety of merchandise is represented, including blankets, meat, dry-goods (most notably shalloon, silk, buckram, and linen), food, chocolate, nails, lumber, tobacco, rum, porringers, combs, whalebone, coffee, tea, thread, and many "biskets."  Each entry includes the date, customer name, a brief description of the item sold, its quantity and price.  Many customers were from coastal New Hampshire and southern Maine.  The shopkeeper occasionally bartered for large quantities of sugar and flour; other items were paid for with cash.
