BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

John Dean Cushing (1795-1866) was a printer.  Born in Salem, Massachusetts, he was the son of Thomas Croade Cushing and Sally Dean Cushing.  After printing newspapers in Salem and Lenox, Massachusetts, he founded The Berkshire Courier in October 1834.  This weekly newspaper was issued in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, and supported the Whig party.  Cushing also used his press for other printing business.  The offices of the paper were burned in the spring of 1839, but publication resumed a month later.  Cushing formed a partnership with Clark W. Bryan in 1846 and the name of the paper was changed to The Berkshire Courier and Great Barrington Gazette.  The following year, 1847, Theodore Dewey replaced Bryan as a partner and the name was changed, for a brief time, to The Berkshire Courier and Housatonic Mirror.  In 1848, Clark W. Bryan returned to The Great Barrington Courier as business manager but left again in 1852.  John Cushing published the paper alone until he sold it to Marcus H. Rogers in 1865.
