BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Daniel Fisher seems to have begun his career as a bleacher in Coleraine, Ireland.  In 1797, he emigrated to America following his detainment in a Derry jail for his involvement in events that led to the Rising of 1798.  Fisher settled first in Philadelphia, but by 1799 was a merchant in New York City dealing in Irish linen and threads, potash, cotton, and leather goods.  Following the collapse of his business in 1812, he became involved in making weather glasses and razor strips in Newburgh, N.Y.  Fisher was also an officer in the New York "Republican Greens" Rifle Battalion, a member of the Tammany Society, book collector, and author of "A System of Military Tactics...," 1805.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Consists of two volumes relating primarily to Daniel Fisher's mercantile activities from 1795 to 1805.  Both volumes have a stamp for Daniel Fisher, Bleacher, in Coleraine.  The first volume contains three sections of accounts.  Ledger pages document amounts individuals owed to Fisher and accrued interest on those balances in 1795 and 1796 in Ireland.  The second section contains invoices for cocoa, potash, thread, and linens shipped by Fisher to and from New York City.  The third section contains accounts for a variety of items, including furniture.  Quantities suggest that these goods were probably purchased for Fisher's home.  The second volume documents a trip Fisher took to Georgia and South Carolina in 1802.  Entries note merchants with whom Fisher met, fellow diners and travelers, and notes on the cotton business, particularly inspection.  Included is a list of the "most respectable merchants in Savannah," references to letters of introduction, and a record of interest paid on notes from 1802 to 1804.  The volume also contains a list of pottery, dishes, hollowware, tinware, and wines.
