HISTORICAL STATEMENT

The Pine Grove Furnace was located on Mountain Creek, a branch of Yellow Breeches Creek, fourteen miles southeast of Carlisle in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1770 (other sources say 1764) by Robert Thornburg and John Arthur, and passed through the hands of George Stevenson, Findlay McGrew, Jacob Simons, Michael Ege (lived 1750-1815), Joseph Thornburg, Thomas Thornburg, Peter Ege, and the Watts family. It was in operation until the 1870s. The property is currently a Pennsylvania park, Pine Grove Furnace State Park, and some of the structures remain.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Consists of two volumes relating to the activities of the Pine Grove Furnance. The first volume is a time book kept from 1787 to 1791. In addition to the names of workmen, lists in the item include accounts of work done in making a new saw mill and a new head race in 1789, accounts of work done at the casting house, work done at the kitchen, agreements to work, work in the smith shop, "pottware" made by workers (Dutch ovens, kettles, wagon boxes, pots of various sizes), amounts of cordwood, and amounts paid for hauling, "coaling," and driving teams. The volume also contains a record of weights of calves and other animals slaughtered at the furnace. In 1791, a house was started for African American workers, but the only work recorded was digging the foundation. Days of "diet" are also noted for the workers.

The second volume is a daybook kept from 1788 to 1789. Entries document the output of the furnace, including skillets, fire dogs, plate stoves, "pottware for dutch ovens," castings for griddles, castings for Franklin stoves, and "pottware for window weights." Pork, salt, flour, and other groceries, supplies for the kitchen, are also mentioned. The last page bears the name of John Arthur, perhaps the keeper of the manuscript.

ORGANIZATION

Time book was written in from front towards middle and at the same time from back towards middle. Entries in each section are, for the most part, in chronological order. For indexing purposes, the pages are numbered 1-56 (front towards middle), then the book must be flipped upside down, and the inside back cover begins a new page sequence, 57-132.
