BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Lucy R. Tatnall was the daughter of Joseph Tatnall and Sarah Richardson.  She resided in Wilmington, Delaware.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Contains two volumes of scrapbooks that belonged to Lucy R. Tatnall.  One of the volumes may have been started by Hannah Pemberton around 1810.  Both volumes feature engravings depicting Presidents of the United States and their wives, historic figures, physicians, views of the Capitol and other Washington, D.C. structures, busts of famous Quakers, and residences in and around Philadelphia, Pa.  A few pencil sketches showing Quaker meeting houses are also present.  Several poems are interspersed throughout the volumes; one of the poems was written about assembling scrapbooks.  The first volume also includes fashion plates and photo postcards that were removed from another album.  A few silhouettes are laid in.  The second volume contains a letter signed by John Pemberton and a brief Pemberton family genealogy.  Laid in is a reproduction (dated 1925) of William Penn's First Charter, as well as a clipping about historic homes in Wilmington, Delaware, from 1914.  Drawings in both volumes were given to S. R. Wood, the teacher of the people who did the drawings.  The name Lucy R. Tatnall is inscribed in pencil in both volumes.
