BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Born in 1775 in Willistown, Chester County, Pennsylvania, Samuel Garrett was the son of Samuel Garrett (1742-1812) and Susanna Lewis.  In 1803, he married Sarah Worrall.  They resided in Willistown until 1817, when they moved to Philadelphia for two years.  After returning to Willistown, Samuel moved to Upper Providence, where he died in 1820.  He appears to have engaged in tanning and other leatherwork.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Records debits and credits accrued by Samuel Garrett for such activities as tanning, currying, boot and shoe making, and other leatherwork.  A variety of skins and hides are mentioned.  Also noted are food, whiskey, nails, and other items purchased from a local store.  Most of the accounts feature notes about settlement signed by Garrett and the other party.  Several bills and receipts are laid in (some are pinned to pages).  The volume offers a fairly extensive record of trade in a small community.
