BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

 

James Stiles was a planemaker in New York, N.Y.  In 1775, he resided on Barclay St.

 

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT

 

Documents amounts paid for goods and services by Stiles in sporadic entries from 1773 to 1827.  A few of the entries note purchases of specific items, including loaves of bread, candles, and payment of taxes.  Two of the receipts pertain to the making of planes and indicate that Jason Fraim and Thomas Napier were either working for or supplying Stiles with various types of planes.  Another receipt, dated Nov. 28, 1775, documents his purchase of a mahogany desk from Peter Anderson, a joiner.  Additional receipts relate to court proceedings.  The volume also contains a list of births and deaths of family members.
