BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Maria M. Clark Fifield resided in Salisbury, New Hampshire.  She was born in New York on June 6, 1835; her parents were Jonathan and Matilda Clark.   Maria married John W. Fifield of New Hampshire on November 19, 1855.  On Dec. 16, 1860, she gave birth to Addie M., her first child (possibly her only child).  Addie married Leon Weston Buswell in 1881 and died in 1888.

John W. Fifield was a farmer, the son of Jonathan W. and Theodora Dickinson Fifield, born December 6, 1832.   He died on May 13, 1891.   His sister Julia, who married Francis Shaw in 1854 or 1855, is mentioned in the diary.  Both John and Maria had sisters named Martha, and Mary.  Women by these names are mentioned in the diary, and are probably references to these sisters.  Maria’s sister Mary married John Cram in 1857 (Maria almost always spelled the surname as Crom).  Maria and John also mention her brothers Stillman and Helon.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Daily notes of a young housewife, aged 22 to 27, and her husband, a farmer.  Maria’s diary entries cover January 1, 1857-December 31, 1861, with a very few scattered entries for 1862, and some notes about boarders, dated 1865.  John’s diary covers January 1, 1860-December 31, 1862.  The bulk of Maria’s entries report on the weather and her domestic activities.  While Maria spent most of her time with routine chores, including baking, washing, ironing, churning butter, blackberry picking, soap making, making cheese, spinning, making clothes, and quilting, she did find enough time to make and braid hats to sell at a local store.  Later, she joined a sewing circle and put her talents to work making clothing for Civil War soldiers.  Maria participated in a few social activities, most importantly making and receiving visits to and from family and friends.  She and her husband enjoyed attending local sings.  They also went to meetings of the Odd Fellows, church, a lecture on spiritualism at the local schoolhouse, and several local fairs.

At the end of Maria's diary entries in the second volume are found a few scattered accounts; her husband John used the rest of the volume for his diary, covering 1860-1862.  He recorded his farm work, including haying, sowing wheat and planting other crops, cider making, butchering, mowing oats, drawing wood, and digging potatoes.  He also shingled his house, had the oxen shod, attended town meetings, and sometimes just stayed home.  John lost his hired hand William to a New Hampshire regiment, but otherwise, the affects of the Civil War are not recorded.   John’s entries tend to be quite brief.  He and Maria took one trip to a beach (Aug.-Sept. 1861).  Thanksgiving and the  Fourth of July are the holidays most often mentioned as being celebrated.  Fast days are noted, but nothing else special about the day was mentioned.  Christmas is almost totally ignored.  Maria noted hers and John’s birthdays and wedding anniversary, but as with fast days, nothing else seemed to be special about those days.
