BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Jennie N. Munger Gregory resided in Geneva, Ashtabula County, Ohio.  Her husband, Bert Gregory (Harry Bert), was listed in the 1900 census as a manufacturer of hooks.  She occasionally worked in his shop.  Jennie Munger was the daughter of Henry P. and Huldah Munger, farmers in Geneva, Ohio.  She married Bert Gregory on June 13, 1894, in Cuyahoga County, Ohio.  In 1900, the couple lived with her mother and older brother Frank on the Munger farm.  They apparently had no children.  Jennie was listed as age 27 in the 1900 census, and Bert as age 29.

Bert Gregory was the son of Frank and Henrietta L. Gregory of Ashtabula, Ohio.  He was born on April 1, around 1870.  His sister Lena is mentioned in the diary; he also had a brother named Archie.

The Flora/Flo mentioned in the diary is Flora Garrett Munger, married to Henry Munger.  Their daughter Marguerite was born June 26, 1894.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Entries record the activities of Jennie Munger Gregory, whose life revolved around domestic activities, her husband's business, and social events.  Her domestic schedule included: cleaning, baking, washing, sewing, ironing, etc.  She mentions doing some upholstering, making pillow cases and doilies, painting and firing china, taking painting lessons, keeping a garden in which she grew both vegetables and flowers, and cleaning the family silver.  Jennie also did fancy work and attended a dancing school.  Her Thanksgiving entry suggests that the holiday celebrated today was less important in her day.  She had her in-laws over for an early, probably mid-day, meal and after they left around 2:00 pm., she and her husband went to his office to work, arriving back home at 8:00 pm.  In the summer, Jennie reports that she straightened up the boarding hall and two cottages, seemingly at a summer camp on Lake Erie.  From August 28 through September 11, they took a vacation cruising on Lakes Erie, Huron, and Superior.  The entries about this are not very descriptive.
