BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

The American Institute was a club in New York City concerned with promoting industrial education. It sponsored an annual exhibition featuring current technological advances. In 1833, the institute organized a library for the use of its members and later published a catalog of the library holdings.  After moving several times within Brooklyn, a building for the American Institute was purchased in 1849.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Contains 73 applications for membership in the American Institute.  The majority of applicants used a standard printed form which was addressed to the sponsoring member (often the corresponding secretary, Thaddeus B. Wakeman) and the occupation, place of residence, and signature of the applicant.  The applicant's name and date of admission were written on the back of the slips.  The participants represented a wide range of occupations, including accountants, attorneys, chemists, clerks, craftsmen, gardeners, manufacturers, merchants, physicians, ship builders, tavern keepers, teachers, etc.  Most of the members were from Brooklyn and Long Island, but members also resided in New Jersey, upstate New York, Ohio, and South Carolina.
