BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

 

Nathaniel Holmes was a painter in Barnstable, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, during the first half of the 1800s.

 

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT

 

Contains accounts for a wide variety of items and activities, including painting, paint grinding (especially grinding verdigris), papering, puttying, cutting and setting windows, carting, making and setting tombstones, and food in general.  Of particular note are references to the painting and lettering of ships and signs; painting and striping chairs; and color used on blinds.  Also, page 67 contains the entry "to a Ballance Due of Governor Hinckley's tombestones."
