BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Daybook was kept by an unknown person.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Contains daily entries of debits and credits at a Connecticut general store to be transferred to account books.  The manuscript entries, made between July 1801 and April 1802, record purchases of a wide variety of goods, including spices, spoons, kettles, rum, thimbles, meat, knives, ribbon, and stockings.  Perhaps most interesting are the many entries for the sale of reams of different kinds and sizes of paper, including (on p. 164) one for 21 reams of printing paper to Steman, Willard & Co.; another including a marginal note that "These 5 reams Paper was the first paper sent belonging to the Compy.;" and a third giving credit "By his acct. against the Paper Mill."  Earlier (on p. 23) there appear consecutive entries giving credit for 740 and 553 pounds of rags.

The daybook's creator is unknown, but seems to have been located in Tolland County, Connecticut, as most of the names in the book also appear in an index of the 1800 federal census of Tolland County, many residing in the town of Hebron.  Some entries appear in the book as (e.g., pages 110 and 127) "By a Coventry town Order."  There are also many entries for "carting" to Norwich, and to East Haddon, Hartford, and Stockbridge.

The first extant 11 pages are covered with pasted in newspaper clippings from Connecticut newspapers of the 1880s.  For the most part, the clippings tell about the state's Civil War veterans.
