SCOPE AND
CONTENT
In this assemblage of manuscripts are receipts for
personal and commercial transactions, mostly from the New Lebanon, New York,
Shaker community, but also for Alfred, Maine, and Hancock and Harvard,
Massachusetts. The personal receipts are
for loans, for work performed, and for property damage. All date from the late
eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. They are without exception in
handwritten form.
Receipts covering commercial transactions constitute
the bulk of the group and date from the 1820s to 1906; most, however, are from
the 1820s through the 1840s. These manuscripts are chiefly handwritten,
although several are on printed forms with illustrations. Most of the
commercial receipts are from store owners who sold goods to members of the
Shaker community at New Lebanon, N.Y. These
goods range from the miscellaneous items needed to carry on with everyday life
to stoves and livestock. Slightly more
than two dozen commercial receipts from the 1870s are from shipping lines and
railroads. They provide a record of what
was sent to England and to other parts of America from New Lebanon's seed
industry.
Individually these manuscripts might offer little
information to researchers. Collectively, however, they are a valuable
resource for studying how the Shakers had to use "the world" in order
to maintain themselves apart from it.
ORGANIZATION
Items are in accession number order, which is not
chronological order.
