BIOGRAPHICAL
STATEMENT
Alexander W. Katlan is a fine painting conservator,
his business being called Alexander Katlan Conservator, Inc., located in
Flushing, New York. Katlan received his
master’s degree in fine arts conservation from Dominican University’s program
at the Villa Schifanoia, near Florence, Italy.
He also has a master’s degree in art history from Queen’s College, City
University of New York. He studied micro-chemical
analysis and art conservation microscopy at the McCrone Research Institute. He is a member of both the American Institute
for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC) and the International
Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (IIC).
Mr. Katlan has lectured and written articles and
books. He has particularly focused on
artists’ materials, such as stretchers and boards, and on 19th
century American suppliers of artists’ materials. The paint suppliers were known as colormen. He has also written several books about
exhibits held by New York City’s Salmagundi Club.
Mr. Katlan is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Nathaniel
Robert Katlan.
SCOPE AND
CONTENT
Research notes accumulated by Alexander Katlan,
primarily for his books American Artists’ Materials Suppliers Directory, volumes I and II. The papers also reflect his interest in marks
found on stretchers and artists’ canvases, marks of foreign suppliers of
artists’ materials found on American paintings, patents for canvas stretchers,
labels on frames, colormen (makers and suppliers of paint for artists), and
other information pertinent to studying sources of artists’ materials in 19th
century United States. Katlan acquired
research notes from Jerome Nathans and built upon Nathans’ work. Included in the collection are a draft and a
copy of his thesis about 19th century New York City colormen,
completed for Queen’s College of CUNY in 1986.
A copy of his article “Early Wood
Fiber Panels: Masonite, Hardboard, and Lower Density Boards,” together with
notes accumulated while researching this topic, are also found. Index cards for colormen, artists’ materials
suppliers, and artists are in Boxes 22-27.
ORGANIZATION
General files are in boxes 1-15; boxes 16-19 holds
writings (book drafts and articles) by Katlan; box 20 is legal size files;
