BIOGRAPHICAL
STATEMENT
Margaret M. Watherston was a paintings conservator,
specializing in modern art, especially color field paintings, and murals. Born in Canada, she worked in New York City. She graduated from the Ontario College of
Art, where she studied art and art history.
She also studied with the Art Students League in New York City and took
classes at Columbia University.
She apprenticed with Sheldon Keck at the Brooklyn
Museum Conservation Laboratory. When the
Whitney Museum called Keck to recommend a conservator, he recommended
Watherston, and thus she began work for that museum. As she stated in one document, “[The Whitney]
did not have funds or the space to establish a laboratory at the Museum so I
set up my own and my career in conservation developed from this.” At the Whitney, Watherston worked on contemporary
art works and had to develop new conservation techniques for handling those
pieces, especially the color field works.
Watherston also worked on murals. Among her major clients were Metropolitan Life
Insurance Co. (murals by N.C. Wyeth), the American Museum of Natural History,
the United Illuminating Co., and the Williamsburg (N.Y.) Housing Authority.
