BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

 

Trudy E. Gilgenast, a native of Delaware, was a professor of German and director of the German language student study abroad programs at the University of Delaware.  She received her undergraduate degree from UD, and a master’s in German from Middlebury College.  She studied and taught in Germany as well as Delaware.  She received a Certificate of Merit from the Goethe Institute in 1984 and a Federal Republic of Germany Friendship Award in 1987.  Ms. Gilgenast lectured on German culture in Delaware schools. 

 

Ms. Gilgenast has authored or co-authored three books: Das Mehl ist Anders = The Flour is Different: German Heritage Recipes and Traditions, The Saengerbund: A 150 Year History of the German Club in Delaware (with Hilde Cox), and Pennsylvania German Broadsides: A Reflection of Daily Life, 1741-1890.  Trudy Gilgenast is a member of the Delaware Saengerbund.

 

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT

 

Photocopies and photographs of printed Pennsylvania German broadsides, a number of which were translated by Trudy Gilgenast and published in her book Pennsylvania German Broadsides.  The collection only contains copies of the originals, no translations and no original broadsides.  Most of the copies are marked with the location of the original, as Ms. Gilgenast scoured Pennsylvania libraries to find these examples.
