BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

 

Abraham Jarvis was an Episcopal minister and the second American Episcopal Bishop of Connecticut.  He was born in Norwalk, Conn., on May 5, 1739, graduated from Yale College in 1761, and was ordained a priest in London, England, in February 1764.  He became rector of Christ Church in Middletown, Connecticut in 1765, and served there until 1799.  Jarvis was elected bishop in 1796 and consecrated in 1797.

 

In 1766, Abraham Jarvis married Ann Farmar, daughter of Samuel Farmar, a merchant in New York City.  Ann died in 1801, and Jarvis then married Lucy Lewis of Philadelphia.  Abraham died in New Haven on May 13, 1813.

 

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT

 

A small collection of papers pertaining to Abraham Jarvis of Connecticut.  There are 3 receipts, a promissory note, a note about an address, and 10 deeds of sale or quitclaims to property.  Jarvis bought property primarily in Middletown, where he lived most of his life.  Several of the legal documents pertain to land sold by Abigail Ward, widow of James Ward, to Jarvis, and include quitclaims signed by her daughters and sons-in-law.
