BIOGRAPHICAL
STATEMENT
Holly Maxson is an art
conservator, specializing in photographs and prints on paper. Currently, she is curator of the Milton J.
Hinton Photographic Collection. She
received a BFA degree in printmaking and photography from the Tyler School of
Art of Temple University in 1975. She
was a photographer and worked in a photography gallery before apprenticing with
art conservator Marilyn Kemp Weidner.
Maxson then worked at the Conservation Center for Art and Historic
Artifacts (CCAHA) in Philadelphia before setting up a private conservation practice.
Holly Maxson partnered with
David G. Berger to establish the Milton J. Hinton Photographic Collection to
preserve the negatives and photographs taken by this jazz musician (lived
1910-2000). They created the film
“Keeping Time: The Life, Music & Photographs of Milt Hilton” in 2002. They also wrote the book Playing the Changes: Milt Hilton’s Life in Stories and Photographs
(Vanderbilt University Press, 2009).
This title won a best book award from the Jazz Journalists Association.
Ms. Maxson is a member of the
