BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Hamish Henry Alexander Stewart Treviranus was a horseman and an art conservator working in the Washington, D.C., area.  He was raised in Scotland.  He received a certificate in engineering drawing from the Burnley School of Science in Lancashire, a BA in art history and a diploma in organic chemistry from the University of Manchester, an MFA degree from Edinburgh University, and his conservation training at New York University and the Brooklyn Museum.  He studied under Sheldon Keck and received early training from Russell Quandt.

Mr. Treviranus was a member of the International Institute for Conservation, the American Institute for Conservation, and the Washington Conservation Guild.  He served on the National Conservation Advisory Council and the Advisory Commission to Sri Lanka Cultural Triangle sponsored by UNESCO, consulting on the conservation of temple murals.  As a conservator, he worked on paintings and murals, including a number of WPA murals found in post offices.  He was head of Stewart-Treviranus Associates, a firm which conserved and cleaned paintings and murals and in which a number of conservators and technicians received training.

Mr. Treviranus served in the British military.  He competed in equestrian events at the 1952 Summer Olympics, representing Canada, and continued his interest in horsemanship for many years.  He promoted eventing in the United States, and taught the cross-country portion of that sport.  He was a member of the St. Andrew’s Society and enjoyed Scottish country dancing.  He was also an artist.  He died in 2008.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The bulk of the collection is treatment reports and photographs.  Stewart Treviranus Associates treated and cleaned a number of murals, particularly in post offices, but also in other government buildings.  He also cleaned and conserved paintings for a number of private clients.  The files include a very little information about his work for UNESCO in Sri Lanka.  There is some correspondence (most correspondence is filed with the treatment reports), a little information about Stewart Treviranus’ training, some information about artists, and other items of interest and use to Stewart Treviranus.

ORGANIZATION

The files are arranged in 3 groups: general files, treatment files, and photographs and slides.  Some photos are also found in the treatment files.  Treatment files are arranged alphabetically, A-Z, but in two groups: smaller files (more than one client per folder) and larger files (only one client per folder).  Some photographs and slides are arranged by name of owner of the work, and some photos are arranged by number.  It is not known, however, what the number sequence signifies.

Originally, many of the pre-1990 treatment files were arranged by client name, and the post-1990 files were arranged by year.  However, as some clients were in both groups, it was decided to arrange all treatment files by client name.
