BIOGRAPHICAL
STATEMENT
Frank L. Hohmann, III, is a retired Wall Street
executive who collects American furniture.
He is especially interested in American brass dial clocks. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of Winterthur
Museum and a liveryman in the Worshipful Company of Clock-Makers,
SCOPE AND
CONTENT
Research materials gathered by Frank Hohmann for his
two books on clocks. Series I includes
the notes, biographical notes, photographs (many on CDs), and correspondence
accumulated for the book Timeless:
Masterpiece American Brass Dial Clocks.
Additional contributors to this
book were Kirtland H. Crump, Donald L. Fennimore, Morrison H. Heckscher, Martha
H. Willoughby, and David F. Wood. Most
of the materials are filed by name of clock maker. The clocks featured in this book were made
between 1720 and 1785. The clock
descriptions are for both the clock works themselves and for the cases. Most of the clocks are tall case clocks.
Series II, an addition to the collection, includes
Frank Hohmann’s notes and photographs (on compact disks) for the book Stretch: America’s First Family of
Clockmakers, which he co-authored with Donald L. Fennimore. (Fennimore’s notes on the same book are also
at this repository, Col. 865.) This
series also includes some information on David Rittenhouse and a list of
scientific instruments held by Winterthur Museum.
ORGANIZATION
The papers are in two series:
Series I: notes and photos
for Timeless: Masterpiece American Brass Dial
Clocks; and Series II: notes and photos for Stretch: America’s First Family of Clockmakers.
Most of the materials in Series I are arranged by first
by state in which clock was made and then by name of clock maker. Most of the materials in Series II are
arranged by the catalog number in the book about the Stretch family.
LANGUAGE OF
MATERIALS
The materials are in English.

notes and photos for Stretch: America’s
First Family of Clockmakers (acc. 14x58)
The clock files include an information sheet and one
or more CDs of photographs. Other files
are mostly CDs of photographs.
Note: each folder was filed in catalog number order;
there was also another number associated with each file, but it is not known
what this number signified (perhaps the order in which the clocks were
originally filed, before the final catalog order); both numbers are retained.
