SCOPE AND CONTENT

 

An artificial and growing collection of negotiable instruments: checks, promissory notes, and bills of exchange, issued by individuals, banks, companies, and local and state governments.  Many of the items are printed forms, while others are entirely handwritten.  Included are a book of check stubs from the State Society of the Cincinnati of Pennsylvania, negotiable instruments from various banks in Delaware, and a fragment of a promissory note bearing the signature of John Hancock.  Most of the items are from the New England and Mid-Atlantic areas, with some from the South, some from England, one item from Martinique, and checks from banks in Montana and Idaho.  Some of the items bear engravings of people at work, factories, ships, or landscapes.
