BIOGRAPHICAL
STATEMENT
Fonda Ghiardi Thomsen was a textile
conservator. Most noted for her work on
flags, she also conserved quilts, samplers, military uniforms, and civilian
clothing, most notably the suit worn by Abraham Lincoln the night he was assassinated. She was interested in solving the problems
associated with exhibiting large textiles. She became the director of Textile
Preservation Associates in
Ms. Ghiardi (the name she uses in retirement) earned
a Bachelor of Science degree from Pennsylvania State University and worked in
biochemical and medical research for three years. She then took art and museum studies classes
at the Corcoran School of Art and at George Washington University. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree at
Maryland Institute College of Art. Ms.
Thomsen began working as a conservator in 1968, first at the Smithsonian

SCOPE AND
CONTENT
The bulk of the collection consists of treatment
files from Textile Preservation Associates (TPA), including treatment proposals;
analyses of the items to be conserved; reports of work done; photographs of
items before, during, and after treatment; and samples of threads and
fabrics. Often, drawings showing details
of construction of the items are included; as well, there is a cloth pattern
for the suit of clothes worn by Abraham Lincoln the night he was assassinated. (The clothes were conserved for the Ford’s
Theater National Historic Site.)
Sometimes, there is a history of the item being conserved or information
about the person or military unit who made or used the item. Most of the photographs are slides or are on
CDs. TPA conserved a large number of
flags, plus quilts, uniforms, samplers, and civilian clothing, for a wide
variety of museums, historical societies, government agencies, and private
individuals.
The collection also includes treatment reports
completed while Ms. Thomsen worked for the National Park Service, reports of
surveys and conservation assessments done for various collections, some
correspondence, papers written by Ms. Thomsen, and papers presented at meetings
sponsored by the Harpers Ferry Regional Textile Group, an organization of
textile conservators working in and around
