BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Rudolf H. Buenz designed stained glass windows. He was born in Hamburg, Germany, where he studied at the Kunst Gewerbe Schuler. He apprenticed with Crystel Kuball. Buenz immigrated to the United States in 1925, sponsored by his cousin Rudolf Dirks, creator of the Katzenjammer Kids cartoon strip. In New York, Buenz first worked in the studio of Otto Heinigke, then at the Brink’s studio. He worked briefly in Philadelphia and Boston before opening his own business in Newton, New Jersey. Among his many commissions were windows for churches in New Jersey, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Florida, New York, Michigan, Illinois, and Ohio.

Rudolf’s first wife was Catherine Williams, and they had several daughters. In 1953, Buenz married Dorothy Waldrip (died 2017 at age 95; born in Louisville, Kentucky, but raised in Nashville, Tennessee).

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Cartoons, or drawings, for stained glass windows designed by Buenz for churches in the United States. Most depict Jesus, angels, or saints, but others bear coats of arms or memorial inscriptions. In some designs, items of interest to the commissioner of the window, such as an airplane or boat, will also appear.

ORGANIZATION

The drawings arrived in bundles, and are being arranged one bundle at a time. Within each bundle, an attempt has been made to bring together all the drawings which belong to a particular commission. However, as the drawings must be housed by size, not all can be filed together.

Purchased from Dorothy Buenz, through Colophon Books.

Most of the cartoons are still in storage and are not available for research unless special permission is granted. Digital images of the cartoons which have been processed are available at the repository and must be used before access to the original drawings will be granted.
