BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Ian MacLeod Graham Quimby was director of publications at the Winterthur Museum for many years, and before that worked in the registrar’s office.  After leaving Winterthur, he edited the Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography.  He was born in Portland, Maine on May 17, 1931.  His father, George R. Quimby, was a grocery store manager.  Ian did not show early promise of a scholarly career as he dropped out of high school.  However, while serving in combat in Korea, he became interested in obtaining a college degree.  After taking a job in Delaware, he enrolled at the University of Delaware, first as a part-time student and later as a full-time student.  He earned a degree in English and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1961.  He then entered the Winterthur Program in Early American Culture (WPEAC) and graduated in 1963.

Mr. Quimby served a two year stint as curator at the Merrimack Valley Textile Museum.  In 1965, he returned to Winterthur to serve as registrar.  In 1970, he became director of publications and editor of Winterthur Portfolio.  He oversaw the Portfolio’s transformation from an annual collection of articles on the American arts into a scholarly journal published several times a year by the University of Chicago Press.  He also oversaw the production of many Winterthur books.  In 1991, he retired from Winterthur and became editor of the Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, headquartered at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, a position he held for ten years.

Mr. Quimby wrote a number of articles and several books, including American Silver at Winterthur and Apprenticeship in Colonial Philadelphia.  He was elected to the University of Delaware Wall of Fame in 1984.  He was a member of the Society of Architectural Historians, the Decorative Arts Society, and other historical and art organizations.

Ian Quimby was married twice.  His second wife, Maureen, was a graduate of the WPEAC program in 1968.  They had two sons, Sean and Patrick.  Mr. Quimby died on November 4, 2002.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The bulk of the papers relate to American silversmiths of the 17th, 18th, and early 19th centuries.  This material was probably collected while Mr. Quimby was researching his book American Silver at Winterthur, although he also gathered information about silver owned by other museums.  He collected biographical information on the silversmiths as well as information about their marks and the items which they made.  Some photographs are included in the silversmith files, while other photos and slides are filed separately.   Some information about the publication of the book American Silver at Winterthur is found in the papers.

The collection also includes information about the acquisition of silver by Henry Francis du Pont; all this information is believed to be copies of materials in the Winterthur Archives.  Mr. Quimby was interested in the technical analysis of the content of silver made by early American silversmiths, and the results of testing undertaken by Winterthur’s Conservation Lab are included.  As well, the collection contains copies of talks and lectures given by Mr. Quimby; articles written by him; information pertaining to professional organizations to which he belonged, especially the Decorative Arts Society (DAS) and the Society of Architectural Historians (SAH); and some personal correspondence and other personal papers.  In 1998, Quimby team-taught a class in Public History at the University of Delaware, and the collection includes some information about that class.  As a side line, Mr. Quimby assisted Pamela Cunningham Copeland with the editing and publishing of her memoirs, and copies of the galleys and correspondence about this project are found.
