BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Mann S. Valentine, Jr., of Richmond, Virginia, gained his fortune from Valentine’s Meat Juice, a health tonic made from beef.  He was the son of Elizabeth Mosby and Mann S. Valentine, a merchant.  The younger Mann was interested in history and collected artifacts of all sorts.  When he died in 1892, he left his home, his collections, and the Wickham House to the city of Richmond for a museum, which opened in 1898.  Mann’s brother Edward, a sculptor as well as a collector, served as president of the museum and left his personal collections to it when he died in 1930.  The Valentine Museum became the Valentine Richmond History Center in 2000.  The museum is located at 1015 East Clay Street, in downtown Richmond.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Photostatic copies of bills and a few receipts, mostly addressed to Mann S. Valentine, the originals of which are in the collection of the Valentine Richmond History Center.  He purchased a wide range of goods, including stoves, paint, building materials, photographs, iron work, floor coverings, toys, trunks, ice, wood, food, books, cigars and tobacco, clothing and hats, glassware, jewelry, groceries, and other household goods.  He also paid for pew rent, medical and dental services, and carpentry work.  Most of the bills have printed billheads, some of which are illustrated, depicting flowers, wagons, furniture, machinery, pigs, factories, buildings, etc.  Most of the bills are from merchants in Richmond or Manchester, Virginia, with a few from other cities.

Some early bills are from the merchants Valentine & Breeden; the Valentine in this partnership was the father of the founder of the museum.  He and his partner sold “white goods, hosiery, gloves, notions, &c.”
