BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

D. Albert Soeffing is one of the premier American silver historians.  He has written a book on Victorian silver and a number of articles on various silver topics.  The son of Edwin and Harriet Soeffing, he was raised in Rochester, New York.  He received his B.A. in history from St. John Fisher College and his M.A. in history from Fordham University.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Collection includes materials related to silver and jewelers.  It includes boxes (mostly 19th century) from jewelry stores and silver companies; drawings and blueprints of silver pieces; glass plate negatives of silver pieces, most of which have prints; trade cards for jewelers; assorted advertising material, business stationery, photos and illustrations; and miscellaneous items, some of which are not related to silver.  Half the boxes are from Philadelphia jewelers.  Three of the boxes held silver tableware.  The drawings and blueprints are from an unknown source.  Those that bear dates are from the 1920s-1940s.  Some include the name of a company, such as Tiffany or Cartier, but the drawings could be copying pieces made by those companies rather than being drawings done for them.  A number of drawings are marked N.O.M., but it is not known for what those initials stand.  Most of the drawings are not marked with a company name, and these have been arranged by form: candlesticks, trays, bowls, desk sets, etc.

The glass plate negatives, taken in the 1930s, are pictures of silver pieces; most of them have prints.  No company name is associated with these pieces, although they were clearly part of one company’s or store’s stock.  The trade cards are for stores which sold jewelry, watches, clocks, silverware, and other items.  Some stores advertised that they were watch making establishments.  Interestingly, a number of the jewelry stores also sold spectacles and eye glasses (and both forms were named on the same card).  The cards are arranged alphabetically by last name of the jeweler.  Some of the trade cards were decorated with clocks or jewelry, but most were not.  A few trade cards, filed at the end, are for other goods, such as papered wood hangings and bronze powders.

Advertising materials include some pages from trade catalogs and brochures about particular silver flatware patterns, such as Fairfax by Gorham or Francis First by Reed and Barton.  A photo of the interior of a jewelry store shows the kinds of wares that were sold: silver, watches, jewelry, china and glass wares.  Other illustrations depict important pieces of silver.  Two pages from Diderot’s encyclopedia show the tools of the argenteur and a view of his workshop.  A large assortment of billheads from silver companies is found in the collection.  Few include illustrations of silver items, however.  A scrapbook from 1883-1885 includes trade cards, some of jewelers, as well as album, greeting, and reward of merit cards, and pieces of scrap.  A few papers relating to the court case of William Howard vs. Deodat Williams are found.  The case was heard in Boston in the early 1820s; Howard was a jeweler and watchmaker.  A variety of other items, some pertaining to silver and some not, rounds out the collection.
