BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

C. E. Harnish was an illustrator working in York, Pennsylvania, about 1900.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Illustrations of wagons and carriages, probably intended for use in trade catalogs or advertisements.  There are several styles of wagons, a number with enclosed bodies, the rest with open beds.  One is labeled as an ice wagon.  The illustrations are signed or stamped C.E. Harnish, York, Pa.  Several of the illustrations are marked Keystone, probably a reference to the Keystone Wagon Works of Reading, Pa.  Two are marked Rock Hill, and one is marked Hoover, probably a reference to the Hoover Wagon Company of York.  The remaining drawings are not marked with a company name.  Some of the drawings are layered, with a newer drawing of a body on top of an earlier drawing, reusing the wheels from the original drawing.  In addition, the collection includes a caricature of a man smoking a cigar.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE COLLECTION

Location: 3 I 7

05x91.1           A caricature of a man wearing a derby hat, long green coat, patterned trousers, and shoes with spats; carrying a cane and smoking a cigar

05x91.2           A carriage with two seats and a top.  Note: “Re-etch background beneath body and between spokes,” together with some notes about size, line screen, etc.  Numbered on back 4728-4.

05x91.3           An enclosed wagon with an oval window and a lamp on the side; labeled Rock Hill; includes notes; on back: stamped C.E. Harnish, York, Pa. in two places; numbered 6694/8.  Also on the back is a preliminary sketch of another vehicle, with the spokes prominently drawn.

05x91.4           Wagon with open sides, labeled Keystone and signed C.E. Harnish.  Includes notes.  Pinned to the drawing is a printed copy (probably a proof) of this drawing, with a print of another wagon on the reverse side.  Numbered on back: 3868-7.

05x91.5           Enclosed wagon with round windows on the sides, labeled Keystone, no. 304, page 54.  The side of the wagon is on a separate piece of paper and lifts up to show the original drawing underneath (an enclosed wagon with the seat visible).  Includes notes.  On back: stamped C.E. Harnish, York, Pa.; several numbers found on back.

05x91.6           Wagon with one seat and open sides, labeled Keystone in reversed print; includes notes.  On back: stamped C.E. Harnish, York, Pa.; numbered 4050-6.

05x91.7           Enclosed buggy or wagon, labeled Rock Hill, with several notes.  The body of the vehicle lifts up to reveal a different wagon drawing.  On back: stamped C.E. Harnish, York, Pa.; numbered 6604-9, 6604/8 (with the 8 crossed out).

05x91.8           An enclosed wagon, with several notes written on the front; signed C.E. Harnish in reversed letters.  On back: stamped C.E. Harnish, York, Pa.; numbered 7770/6.  The paper on which the body of the wagon is drawn is glued to the paper on which the wagon wheels are drawn.

05x91.9           Enclosed wagon with rectangular window on the side; labeled Keystone, with several notes penciled in.  On back: stamped C.E. Harnish, York, Pa.; numbered 3846-6.  The wagon body drawing is glued on top of another piece of paper, but the top paper is not loose enough to see what is underneath.

05x91.10         An open wagon bed, labeled Keystone, no. 114, page 8, with other notes.  The wagon drawing is glued on top of two other pieces of paper, and is loose enough to see parts of the two drawings underneath, one of which was no. 644, page 26.  On back: stamped C.E. Harnish, York, Pa.; numbered 4324-8, with numbers 4180-6 and 3868-7 crossed out.

05x91.11         An enclosed wagon, detached from another piece of paper on which the wheels were drawn (the other piece of paper is not part of the collection), numbered #123, page 86, with other notes.  The drawing is on two pieces of paper glued together.

05x91.12         An open wagon bed, labeled Keystone, with other notes.  The drawing is composed of several different drawings glued together, but nothing seems to be beneath them.  On back: stamped C.E. Harnish, York, Pa.; numbered 4400-6, with 4180-6 and 4000-4 crossed out.

05x91.13         An ice wagon, lettered on the side Hygeia Co. Ice; the drawing is signed C.E.Harnish.  The paper on which the wheels were drawn is now missing.  Numbered on back 6961/5.

05x91.14         An open wagon bed, labeled Keystone, and signed C.E. Harnish, with other notes.  The paper on which the wagon bed is drawn is mostly attached, but a drawing for another wagon bed can be seen beneath it.  On back: stamped C.E. Harnish, York, Pa.; numbered 4400-6, with number 4324-8 crossed out.

05x91.15         An open wagon bed, labeled #101, page 59; with other notes.  The paper on which the wheels were drawn is now missing.  This drawing is on top of one of a closed wagon – part of the bottom drawing is visible.

05x91.16         An enclosed wagon, labeled Hoover, signed C.E. Harnish.  On back: stamped C.E. Harnish, York, Pa.; numbered 7737-6.
